Restless Legs and Vitamins: My Ongoing Search for Relief

A few years ago, right around the time my seasonal symptoms started, I began looking for relief through vitamin supplements. The moment you open your browser and search “restless legs + vitamins,” you’re hit with hundreds of suggestions and supposed remedies. Could this be the answer to my mysterious “illness”?

Starting with Magnesium

I think I started with magnesium. It’s well known for helping relax muscles and possibly preventing muscle cramps. Since restless legs and physical restlessness were (and still are) some of my biggest struggles, I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, magnesium didn’t have much of an impact.
Every now and then I’d have a “good” night and hoped it was thanks to the magnesium — but after months of consistent use, there was no real, lasting improvement.

Going Down the Supplement Rabbit Hole

Driven by desperation, I started buying everything I could find… I spent endless nights reading online articles and ordering yet another “miracle” supplement. I tried Vitamin D, E, C, Iron, Folate, B12, and different flavonoids like Quercetin, Luteolin, and Resveratrol. Despite trying all these supplements, none seemed to provide immediate relief for my symptoms.

However, I ran into a major roadblock: my extreme sensitivity to many medications and supplements.
Especially the flavonoids — my body reacted pretty strongly to them. After just one pill of Quercetin, I felt this weird energetic rush, almost hyper. But not even a day later, I was nauseous, dizzy, and all that energy crashed into a miserable slump. In my eagerness, I had started with a high dose, completely forgetting how sensitive I am.

Lowering the Dose… and Lowering Again

Determined, I lowered the dose. Same negative reaction. Tried the absolute lowest dose possible — slightly better, but still not great.
Next, I tried Luteolin. That night was one of the worst ever: unbearable restless legs, cramps, electrical shocks running through my limbs. Needless to say, I never touched Luteolin again.

At that point, I felt completely lost. So many people online claimed these products changed their lives.
Meanwhile, for me, it was either awful side effects or absolutely no effect at all.

A New Doctor, A New Approach

Around that time, my family doctor changed. My previous doctor was a kind woman, but every visit felt like I had to reintroduce myself all over again. There was no connecting the dots between my long list of symptoms and medications. My healing journey was at a standstill.

But a few months earlier, I had found another doctor through online reviews. He had even shared a personal story on the practice’s website, and it just felt right.
I sent him an email — introducing myself, explaining my symptoms, and asking if he would accept me as a patient. He kindly replied the next day, but unfortunately, his practice was full. Still, he encouraged me to try again later and even gave me tips about supplements related to restless legs.

Six months later, I reached out again. This time, I got in! I’ve now been under his care for five months, and for the first time, I truly feel like someone is walking this path with me.

Addressing the Root Causes

We’ve done several blood tests, and many of my vitamin levels were shockingly low. Our first focus is to get those levels back to normal before digging deeper into what’s causing the imbalances.

Right now, I’m taking magnesium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin D, and B12 — and I’m planning to start omega-3 soon.

It’s a small step, and I know I’m far from where I want to be. But for the first time in years, I feel like my doctor has accepted the challenge — and most importantly, I no longer feel invisible or unheard.

Lingering Questions

The big questions still remain:

  • Has anyone else experienced something similar?
  • Why are my vitamin levels so low?
  • Looking back over past blood tests, I see big swings in levels (especially vitamin D). Why?
  • Is there a deeper problem with vitamin absorption or production?
