Double the Iron – Double the Trouble?

Two days ago, I decided to double my iron supplement. My iron levels have been improving, but at a snail’s pace, so my doctor suggested increasing the dose. Instead of taking 20 mg of iron bisglycinate once a day, I’m now taking it twice a day.
Night One: Pure Chaos
The first night after the change was brutal. I felt even more hyper and wired than usual. My legs were insanely restless, and I kept getting weird muscle jerks — not just in my legs, but in my arms and even my head.
I spent the whole night pacing between my bed and the kitchen — eating, smoking, drinking water, trying anything to calm down — but nothing worked. It was just… chaos.
Night Two: Still No Peace
The next day, I was completely wiped out. At first, I didn’t immediately connect it to the iron. My nights are often unpredictable anyway.
But then the second night hit. Same deal — no sleep, restless as hell. My hips, legs, and feet ached like crazy. It felt like everything was locked up and sore, almost like muscle cramps. I finally passed out around 7:00 in the morning.
Wait… Could It Be the Iron?
When I dragged myself out of bed that morning, feeling even worse than the day before, it finally clicked: could this be from the increased iron dose?
It made me think back to my childhood. I actually had low iron back then too. The advice? Eat more whole wheat bread and apple syrup — classic. But no one ever really looked deeper, probably because I didn’t have daily symptoms at the time.
Now I’m starting to wonder…
Is my body handling iron poorly?
Could bad iron metabolism be a missing piece of the puzzle — maybe even part of what’s been driving my lifelong restlessness and those restless legs?
