Restless Legs: A Sudden Breakthrough

Sunrise

It’s been quite some time since my last post here — mainly because I honestly didn’t know what to write during a very confusing period.

About six weeks ago (July 9th, 2025), I went back to my GP for a check-up. By then, I had stopped taking antihistamines again (third attempt) because, once more, I just didn’t feel good on them. I had that weird “under the influence” feeling, along with extreme tiredness and drowsiness.

On top of that, my gut issues were still going strong — constipation, rumbling, gas, and sensitivity. During a previous appointment, my doctor had sent off a stool sample for testing. Luckily, the results came in that day. Turns out, I had a stomach/gut bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori. According to my doctor, this could very well be the cause of my digestive problems, and it was important to get rid of it.

The treatment? A “triple therapy” — basically, high-dose acid blockers combined with two different antibiotics (six pills a day) for ten days. Then, another four weeks on a stomach protector. Definitely not a fun-sounding time, but necessary to kick the bacteria out.

Restless Legs Update

Of course, my restless legs and sleepless nights also came up during the appointment. At that time, I was in a relatively mild phase. Normally, this time of year, I’d be pacing the house all night long, only falling asleep at sunrise. But now, while I still had restless legs and disrupted nights, they were more like short interruptions — an hour of sleep, then waking up, then another hour, and so on.

And the strangest part? For the past three days before that appointment, my legs had been almost calm. No idea why. As I was explaining this, my doctor smiled slightly and said, “We’ll get there. I have a good feeling about this.” He then wrote me another prescription for a B12 injection (my second one) and scheduled the next check-up for six weeks later.

The Triple Therapy Experience

The next day, I started the antibiotic course: clarithromycin, amoxicillin, and esomeprazole. Not exactly a tropical cocktail! As expected, it wasn’t pleasant. I felt nauseous for most of the 10 days, but luckily, that started to ease a few days after I finished the course.

Now, four weeks later, my stomach was fairly calm right after the treatment, but the constipation and bloating have slowly returned. I’m now taking probiotics to help my gut recover — we’ll see how things go in the coming weeks.

The Most Surprising Twist

Here’s the wildest part: I haven’t had restless legs for weeks now. I’m almost scared to say it out loud in case it comes back tonight… but for now, it’s true!

I’m still pretty restless at night, but my legs have been calm. The weird thing is that my nights still feel the same — I still wake up and toss around — but without the jerking/twitching that used to drive me mad. I do still get some muscle soreness in my calves now and then.

But why? Honestly, I’m not 100% sure. Could it be the B12 injections? (I’ve had two so far: June 25th and July 9th, 2025.) Could it be that my supplements — vitamin D, iron, and folate — are finally kicking in? Or maybe the antihistamines I took for a while calmed my nervous system just enough that I’m still benefiting from it now?

Either way, it’s such a relief to have calmer nights. Now, I just need to figure out why this happened and see if that same factor could help with the rest of my nighttime restlessness.

To be continued…
